Last winter, I helped one of my clients structure a strategic document. The client is young, smart, and works quickly—he drafts nearly every sentence with Claude. The final result was fine. But when I questioned one of the document’s key theses, he was flustered. Not because he disagreed. But because he didn’t know where that statement came from. The AI said it. He submitted it.

This isn’t the AI’s fault. It’s a peculiar side effect of using AI—and the distinction is important.

The calculator paradox, and why we misunderstand it

The usual argument goes like this: the calculator took away our ability to do mental math, yet math got better. So AI will take away writing, coding, and analysis—and everything will get better.

Partly true. But the calculator analogy is flawed, and the flaw lies in the details.

Mental arithmetic was a tool. Addition, multiplication—these are auxiliary skills for deeper layers of thought. When the calculator took over, it didn’t take over mathematical thinking, but rather the mechanics of calculation. The deeper layers—problem identification, estimation skills, and the ability to see connections—remained intact; in fact, they were liberated.

AI takes over different types of tasks. Not the supporting functions—but often the thought process itself. You learn what you think while formulating the text. You understand the problem while writing the code. If AI takes this over, it’s not time that’s freed up—learning ceases.

Cognitive offloading vs. skill atrophy — the critical difference

Cognitive offloading is a long-standing concept in cognitive science: the process of outsourcing cognitive load from the brain to some external tool—a calendar, a list, a search engine. This is not a weakness; it is one of the fundamental strategies of human cognition. Literacy itself is a form of cognitive offloading. External storage frees up processing capacity.

Skill atrophy is different. It occurs when the skill that the tool replaces serves not merely a storage function—but is itself the site of performance and learning. If you never write your own text, your ability to shape your thoughts will not develop. If you never debug on your own, your instinct for problem-solving will not develop. AI removes the friction—and friction is where competence is built.

The difference between the two processes lies not in the fact of using the tool, but in this: what was the process that the tool took over?

If it took over a routine task—offloading—fine. If it took over the process through which you became an expert—atrophy—warning.

The Problem of Invisibility

Deskilling is particularly insidious because it doesn’t hurt. You don’t notice it. The outputs remain unchanged, or even improve—with AI, the document looks better than it would without it. The fact that you didn’t think it through isn’t apparent.

The decline becomes apparent when the AI is taken out of the picture. When the network goes down, the text editor freezes, a client asks a question over the phone, and you have to make a decision immediately. It is in these moments that it becomes clear what you’ve retained in your head and what was in the AI.

The pilot analogy holds true here as well: the modern pilot flies manually for an average of 3 minutes on a transatlantic flight. Everything else is handled by the autopilot. The pilot is certified on paper, their flight hours are in order—but muscle memory and manual reflexes fade away. The crash of Air France Flight 447 in 2009 can be partly attributed to this: the autopilot shut down, the pilots should have taken over—and they couldn’t.

The danger for AI users isn’t that the AI shuts down. It’s that the AI runs continuously—and in the meantime, the competence behind it slowly, imperceptibly withers away.

Deliberate practice alongside AI — specific strategies

The solution is not to reject AI. That would be the one thing you definitely shouldn’t do.

The solution is to consciously incorporate deliberate practice alongside AI—in those areas where maintaining your competence is vital.

Defining zones. Consciously decide which of your skills are core competencies—those you want to retain and develop—and which are support skills that you can safely delegate. Not all areas are the same. Your word processing skills carry different weight than your analytical abilities or your instinct for negotiation.

AI-free trials. Regularly do things without AI—not because the result will be better, but to test what you’ve retained. Write a short analysis without AI. Debug on your own. Sketch out the structure on paper before opening the chat. These aren’t performance tasks, but exercises.

Tracking the process instead of the output. For tasks delegated to AI, at least understand the result. If the AI wrote the summary, read it through and rephrase in your own words what it’s saying. If the AI wrote the code, walk through the logic. Active processing slows you down—but that’s the friction where learning happens.

Revision intervals. If you’ve been working with AI in a particular field for a long time, set aside time to relearn what you’ve likely forgotten. Not in a dramatic way—but at least acknowledge that this is necessary.

The question you must ask

There is no single defense against the deskilling trap—only constant vigilance. The only useful question isn’t “Did I use AI today?” but: “If AI disappeared tomorrow, what would remain?”

If the answer is “most of the important things”—then you’re fine. If the answer is “barely anything”—then it’s worth looking back at what you’ve delegated without realizing it, and what you’d struggle to manage without.

This isn’t a moral question. It’s not about the amount of AI you use. It’s about building your competence alongside AI, not into AI.
