Last summer, a client proudly showed me their market research report. Four hundred completed questionnaires, solid demographics, nice pie charts. 78% of people said they would “gladly try” the new product. Six months later, the product flopped—the actual purchase rate remained around 4%.

The survey didn’t lie. The people didn’t lie. The methodology lied.

The Blind Spot of Traditional Market Research

Surveys and focus groups aren’t bad tools—they’re simply only good for one thing: measuring what people say when we ask them a question. This is different from what they think. Which is, in turn, different from what they do.

Behavioral research calls this long-known phenomenon the intention-behavior gap. The person who marks “very likely to buy” on the questionnaire—that person does something else at the checkout. Not out of malice. The human brain simply functions differently in a questionnaire setting than in a real decision-making situation.

Focus groups are even trickier. There, it’s not just the question that distorts the answer, but the social dynamics as well. People aren’t commenting on the product—they’re commenting to each other. Whoever is louder, whoever is more confident, wins the room. Your opinion remains silent.

This isn’t methodological nihilism. These tools are valuable if you know exactly what they measure. The problem is that most clients—and many researchers—believe that a questionnaire measures the truth. When in fact, it measures only one aspect.

The four sources of GFIS—why four?

The basic idea behind the GFIS (Gestalt Field Intelligence System) methodology I use is simple: people tell different truths in different situations. If you listen to them through only one channel, you get only one truth. The four sources together provide the complete picture.

Web and open text — this is the broadest, most loosely structured source. Blogs, articles, product reviews, forum posts. Here, people express themselves in a longer textual context — they’re less reactive than in a survey, but less direct than in a Reddit thread. Useful for: understanding the general narrative of markets, building concept maps.

Reddit and professional forums — this is gold. I’ll write about this separately, but the bottom line is: the anonymous, non-performative environment brings to the surface opinions that are never shared elsewhere. Practitioner sentiment—that is, what professionals think among themselves, without marketing—can only be authentically accessed here.

YouTube and video content—this is the least-tapped resource for market research. Comment sections are the most authentic space on the internet: long, emotional, genuine reactions to products, trends, and problems. Plus, video view metrics and comment patterns provide data in and of themselves: what is the question people keep asking over and over again?

Academic and scholarly literature — this provides the methodological backbone. Not because academia is always right, but because empirically verified knowledge distinguishes structural patterns from trends. If a phenomenon appears both on Reddit and in the academic literature, it is no coincidence. If it appears in only one—it’s worth being cautious.

The four sources are not interesting in sequence, but in their intersection. Where the same topic appears in all of them, there lies reality.

The Role of AI—and Where It Ends

In AI-augmented methodology, AI can effectively intervene at three points.

First: analysis of large volumes of text. A thousand Reddit posts, five hundred YouTube comments, two hundred product reviews—these cannot be systematically processed by human effort alone. AI is capable of categorizing, identifying themes, and measuring emotional tone—and it does all this in a reproducible manner. This does not replace human interpretation, but it does the work that simply could not be done without it.

Second: hypothesis generation. AI is good at gathering potential questions, contradictions, and gaps in a research field. Not because it thinks better, but because it scans available texts faster. It is the researcher’s task to test these hypotheses against real data.

Third: synthesis and structuring. If you have twenty sources from different channels, AI helps find the common threads and organizes them into a structured form. It doesn’t write for you, but it shows you what fits together and what contradicts each other.

The Trap of Synthetic Data

And here comes the point that is rarely discussed openly: AI must not be used in place of real data.

Synthetic data—that is, AI-generated “what-if answers,” “typical consumer profiles,” “expected market reactions”—is a tempting shortcut. It’s fast, cheap, and comes in a nice format. And it can be deeply misleading.

Large language models reflect what average texts on the internet say. Not what your market or your segment thinks. Synthetic research is therefore not wrong in every case—it serves as a compass-like guide in the conceptual phase. But as a basis for decision-making, a business plan, or a product line? No.

The test is simple: if the decision would change if you collected real data—then you need to collect real data. AI cannot replace one thing: what people actually do in real-life situations.

The methodology that finally doesn’t lie

The combination of the four sources and the AI supplement together creates a research process that is much closer to reality than traditional methods—but not because it’s more expensive or complicated. It’s because it measures more truths at once.

The survey remains. But it doesn’t stand alone—it’s one of four sources, and AI analysis cross-checks its claims. Where the survey is positive and Reddit is negative: that’s where the intention-behavior gap becomes the subject of research. Where both show the same thing: that’s where the strong signal lies.

This methodology isn’t magic. It’s precise, painstaking work—but the kind of work that provides a real basis for decision-making. Instead of a 78% purchase intent, it says: “People say they would buy it, but on forums they write that they won’t because of the price.” This leads to a different decision.
